New flights to La Paz and Loreto — from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport have been announced by American Airlines starting in December. Both destinations sit on the Gulf of California coast in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur.
Travelers from the US are seeing increased options on direct flights to Mexican tourist destinations from various US airports.
“We know that our customers appreciate more access to Mexico, so we’re adding these flights to complement the recent increases for the winter season,” said American spokesperson Nichelle Barrett, who confirmed the network changes.
The Phoenix to Loreto flight will operate four times a week and will start on Dec. 17. The service to La Paz will begin Dec. 19 and will go three times a week. Both flights take about two hours to get to the destination. The flights will operate until May 3.
Both La Paz and Loreto are colonial cities boasting white sand beaches and marine-rich waters. Both cities are destinations for scuba diving, snorkeling, sportfishing, whale watching and surfing.
“Loreto is proud to be added to American Airlines’ flight roster this December,” Jesus Ordoñez, the general director of Baja California Sur Tourism, said in a statement. “Tourism to our small and charming city has grown in recent years as U.S travelers increasingly seek authentic adventure experiences and sustainable destinations.”
Airlines are catering more to the leisure traveler in wake of the collapse, and uncertain return timeline, of business travel because of Covid-19.
