Traveling to Mexico? Safety Travel Tips during COVID-19!!

Covid- 19 is a major global threat that has put our world’s activities on hold. 2020 was an extremely challenging year, but thankfully, we have all managed to adapt to what we now call the “new normal.” Each country around the world is doing its part to contain the virus while at the same time working to get the economy back on their feet. All outdoor activities have restrictions and safety protocols, and indoor activities are currently still something we remember from 2019. We are forced to dine outside in most states, academic activities are pursued online, and due to being forced to stay close to our homes, we are now thinking about our next vacation. If you are traveling to Mexico or have Baja on your mind, keep reading on for tips on how to secure trip protection & travel medical insurance. Also included are safety tips when traveling to Mexico.

Are you Healthy Enough for International Travel?

Firstly, we should know if our health is strong & fit enough to travel internationally. This pandemic poses a significant threat to our health and it is a time that we must minimize the amount of time being away from our home, taking every precaution we do not become ill and catch Corona Virus. Traveling exposes our body to a higher risk of contracting covid-19, so if you are considered a high-risk individual, the first step is to check with your physician and confirm you are fit for international travel before hopping on that plane.

Check Travel Advisories and Restrictions and stay updated.

Next, it is highly recommended that you stay up to date with changing regulations set by CDC and your home State. Prior to travel its best to also become familiar with airline travel restrictions and regulations.  Updates can be found, for Mexico travel advisories at the U.S. Department of State-Bureau of Consular Affairs website. Also, take note that just like anywhere else, each country is approaching a “new normal.” Mexico has its alert level for covid-19 based on a traffic light system:

  • Red (ALERTA MAXIMA) – State is in lockdown. Only essential movements are allowed. Restrictions for high-risk individuals are in place.
  • Orange (ALERTA ALTA) – Essential and non-essential activities are allowed, but limitations and strict safety protocols are implemented. There are some restrictions on high-risk individuals.
  • Yellow (ALERTA MEDIA) – All economic and labor activities are allowed given that safety protocols are followed. Restrictions for high-risk individuals determined by their respective companies remain.
  • Green (ALERTA BAJA) –All activities are allowed without any restrictions, including high-risk individuals.

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico have also posted Covid-19 Information for U.S. Citizens in Mexico. Just recently, CDC has required to show proof of negative Covid-19 results upon entry to the U.S. and it is required that an individual get tested prior to their flight back home. If you speak Spanish and want to retrieve the latest updates regarding covid-19 from the Mexican Government, check out the Gobierno de Mexico website. Cities throughout Mexico such as Los Cabos have also been complying to CDC’s requirements providing rapid antigen tests onsite at hotels and timeshare locations prior to your departure back home. If an individual tests positive or shows symptoms of covid-19, quarantine is mandatory until tests are negative.

Make sure that you have Travel Medical Insurance in Place

When your next travel dates outside the United States are on the calendar, it is now time to secure Travel Medical Insurance. Here are 2 important questions to ask yourself.

  • What if my trip is canceled for a reason beyond my control, but I already paid for my trip? How will I protect my trip investment?
  • What is my plan of action if I have a medical emergency when in a foreign country? Will I have enough cash on hand or enough room on my credit card to pay for the foreign medical expenses.

We understand that these are not the thoughts that run through one’s mind when thinking about their next vacation, however in the event of the unthinkable, it is best to be prepared and mitigate your exposure by securing the correct type of Global Travel Medical insurance. Not all travel medical insurance provides the same types of coverage and many do not cover Covid-19. Traveling in a foreign country comes with planning and to provide yourself and loved ones with the peace of mind needed, Jason Wagner of West Coast Global Insurance Services (WC) offers an insurance policy that includes Trip Cancellation and Interruption Coverage & Travel Medical Insurance bundled in 1 policy.
